Fundamentals of Neuroradiology the Sheffield Course Faculty

The faculty comprises a uniquely skilled and experienced group of Consultant Neuroradiologists and Lectures from Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Hull and Brighton who aim to provide their general radiologist colleagues with a greater proficiency in neuroradiology.

Dr Ruth Batty

Ruth is a Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield and Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Academic Unit of Medical Education at the University of Sheffield.

Ruth graduated from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1998. She trained in general medicine in the UK and Australia (MRCP 2001). Following training in Clinical Radiology in Leeds (FRCR 2005) she became a clinical fellow in Neuroradiology in Sheffield (European Diploma in Neuroradiology 2009 and European Diploma in Paediatric Neuroradiology 2016). She has worked as a consultant Neuroradiologist in Sheffield since 2008.

Ruth’s main area of clinical and research interest is Paediatric Neuroradiology, particularly related to embryology and development. She is training programme director for radiology south for Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber. She  has been a RCR clinical radiology examiner for FRCR 1 and FRCR 2A.

Dr Daniel Connolly

Radiology training in Oxford 1996-2000. Neuro-radiology fellowship Newcastle-upon-Tyne 2000-2002. Consultant in Sheffield since 2002.

Dr Richard Dyde

Richard is a Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield. Prior to his Consultant appointment Richard completed 6 years of post-graduate medical training in Yorkshire and New Zealand. After General Radiology training in Merseyside, he spent 3 years as Neurointerventional Fellow at the Walton Centre NHS trust, Liverpool.

Richard’s sub-specialist interest is Neurovascular disease. He is a member of the NHS England Clinical Advisory Group for implementation of Mechanical Thrombectomy in Yorkshire.

Professor Nigel Hoggard

Nigel joined the University of Sheffield as Clinical Senior Lecturer in 2006 with interests in adult diagnostic neuroradiology and novel MR imaging agents. Prior to that I had been an NHS Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Manchester Neurosciences Centre, Hope Hospital Salford from 2003. I have published over 70 peer reviewed articles.

Dr Mark Igra

Mark is a consultant neuroradiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He undertook his neuroradiology fellowship in Sheffield and has an interest in neuro-oncology, neuroinflammatory conditions and spinal intervention

Dr Andrew Martin

Andy completed his neuroradiology fellowship in Sheffield and is now a Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. He has an interest in neuro-oncology, dementia imaging and spinal intervention.

Dr Sanjoy Nagaraja

Sanjoy has been a Consultant Interventional and Diagnostic Neuroradiologist for 10 years. Trained in Sheffield and Oxford. Was granted a MD in Neuroradiology in 2009 for research in Brain AVMs. Has various publications in Neuroradiology and is also the co-author of Neurology and Neurosurgery a core science, medical and surgical textbook aimed medical students and junior doctors. Invited as faculty for various teaching and research conferences over the years.

Dr Charles Romanowski

Charles has been a Consultant Neuroradiologist in Sheffield since 1995. He trained in neuroradiology in Sheffield and Manchester. His clinical interest is in adult diagnostic neuroradiology, particularly neuro-oncology and the behaviour of low grade gliomas as well as imaging in dementia.

Charles has been the organizer of the Sheffield Fundamentals of Neuroradiology Course since its inception 25 years ago. He lecturers nationally and internationally and is a faculty members on the Erasmus MRI Course and the European Course in Neuroradiology. He is an honorary member of the Polish Medical Society of Radiology. He has been closely involved in the development of the examination for the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR). He is a section editor and author for the new European textbook – Clinical Neuroradiology.

Outside of work, he enjoys playing the piano, water-colour painting, exploring many aspects of his Polish heritage and renovating an eighteenth century farmhouse in Derbyshire.

Dr Nicholas Skipper

Nick underwent neuroradiology fellowship training in Sheffield, subspecialising in paediatric neuroradiology. He undertook a European School of Radiology exchange fellowship in neuroradiology at the Gaslini Children’s Hospital in Italy and is now working as a neuroradiology consultant. He has a keen interest in teaching.

Professor Stavros Stivaros

Stavros is a Consultant Paediatric Neuroradiologist at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Professor of Neuroradiology, University of Manchester.

As the Clinical Lead for the North of England Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service, which is commissioned across both RMCH and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (Liverpool), his clinical work covers a significant proportion of the paediatric population of the United Kingdom. He is Professor of Paediatric Neuroradiology and Translational Imaging at the University of Manchester, where he leads the paediatric multi-parametric imaging research group. He has a special interest in the imaging of the developing brain and the imaging of related disorders.

Stavros’s work on artificial intelligence techniques to fuse and analyse anatomical, physiological and functional imaging in specific disease groups, such as autism, Neurofibromatosis and children’s brain tumours has won recognition as a winner of the Royal College of Radiology Crookshank Medal and at the International Society of Paediatric Neuro-oncology.

Dr Daniel Warren

Dan is a Consultant diagnostic Neuroradiologist at Leeds teaching Hospitals Trust – with specialist interests both within adult and paediatric Neuro-imaging.
Having trained in Sheffield he commenced his consultant position in Leeds in 2011 and has been a member of the FON faculty since 2012.

Dr Lalani Carlton Jones

Dr Lalani Carlton Jones is a consultant neuroradiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’s, The Evelina London and King’s College Hospitals. She graduated from University of Cambridge and Imperial College, training in neurology and neurosurgery prior to general radiology training in London and subsequently the pan-London neuroradiology fellowship. She was appointed as a consultant in 2018 practicing in adult and paediatric neuroradiology and spinal intervention.

Lalani has a keen interest in education. She holds several educational roles including being an honorary senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London, FRCR Anatomy examiner, Vice president for UKIO conference and co-lead for the British Society of Neuroradiologists Educational programme. She has a particular clinical interest in spontaneous intracranial hypotension and spinal CSF leaks, has pioneered techniques in the UK, published and lectured internationally on this topic, as well as contributing to the development of multidisciplinary consensus guidelines for the investigation and management of SIH.

Dr David Paling

David Paling is currently a Consultant Neurologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, visiting Consultant Neurologist at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and clinical lead for the MS Centre, Sheffield.

David’s clinical training was in Manchester and Queen Square London where he completed a PhD under the supervision of Dr Kapoor and Prof Miller in novel MRI imaging techniques in patients with progressive MS.

His current research interests include integrating MRI into clinical practise, novel imaging techniques in patients with progressive MS, technology aided assessment of disability, MS symptom management and clinical trials

Dr Ronan O’Malley

Ronan is a consultant neurologist in Sheffield. He has an interest in cognitive neurology.

Dr Kirsty Harkness

Dr Kirsty Harkness, a Consultant Neurologist in Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Dr Gillian Potter

Gillian has been a Consultant Neuroradiologist in Manchester since 2011. She trained in Neuroradiology in Edinburgh and Vancouver, and completed an MD in cerebral small vessel disease in Edinburgh in 2010. Specialist interests include skull base imaging, proton beam imaging for skull base tumours, H&N imaging and adult cochlear implants. Gillian is an examiner for the RCR in dental and maxillofacial radiology, and for the European Diploma in H&N Radiology (EDiHNR). She has been invited to speak at various teaching conferences and has published several articles in Neuroradiology and H&N radiology.

Dr Richard List

Dr Richard List is a consultant neuroradiologist based in Hull.
